The number on your contract is not your salary. That's the first thing every worker moving to a new EU country needs to understand. Gross salary, net salary, total employer cost — three completely different numbers, and most workers only discover the gap when they see their first payslip. Take €3,000 gross: in Luxembourg you'll pocket about €2,400 net, in France around €1,850, in Germany roughly €1,950, and in Belgium barely €1,750. Same gross figure, four very different lifestyles. Progressive tax brackets are the main reason. You don't pay one rate on your whole salary — each slice of income is taxed at a higher rate as you climb. In France the bracket jumps from 11% to 30% at €28,797, then to 41% at €82,341. Most people don't realise their marginal rate (the rate on their next euro) is much higher than their effective rate (what they actually pay on average). Then come social security contributions, and this is where it gets brutal. In France employees pay around 22% before income tax even starts. Germany takes about 20%. Romania charges a staggering 35% on the employee side. Luxembourg keeps it lighter at 12.95%. And the employer pays even more on top — often 25% to 45% extra — which is why your real cost to the company is rarely what you think. The classic mistake? Negotiating gross when you should be talking net. Or worse, comparing a French job at €40k to a German job at €38k without realising the German net is higher. Real 2026 minimum wages tell the same story: Luxembourg €2,771.33 gross (€2,200 net), Germany €2,409 (€1,800 net), France €1,867.02 (€1,450 net), Bulgaria €620 (€535 net). Always compare net. Always factor in the cost of living. And always run the numbers through a real calculator before you sign anything.
