Germany has no statutory paternity leave at all — the shortest maternity leave in this comparison and the lowest statutory annual leave — but it has by far the longest parental leave, with Elternzeit running up to three years per child.

Mutterschutz covers 14 weeks at 100% of net pay (six weeks before and eight after the birth, extended to twelve after a multiple or premature birth), funded jointly by the health insurer's Mutterschaftsgeld and an employer top-up under the Mutterschutzgesetz.

There is still no statutory paid paternity leave in Germany: fathers take Elternzeit or unpaid time off instead, which is why this calculator shows 0 days. The EU Work-Life Balance Directive's two-week partner leave has not been transposed into a separate German entitlement.

Elternzeit gives each parent up to 156 weeks (three years) of job-protected leave per child, of which up to 24 months can be shifted to any point before the child's eighth birthday. Income support comes from Elterngeld at roughly 67% of prior net pay for 12–14 months, capped at €1,800 per month, with ElterngeldPlus doubling the duration at half the rate.

Statutory annual leave under the Bundesurlaubsgesetz is 20 days on a five-day week (24 days on a six-day week). Collective agreements routinely raise this to 28–30 days, so the statutory figure is a floor most German employees comfortably exceed.
